ABANYALA BA KAKAMEGA: Names for various Payments.

Abanyala (K) have some form of payments and gifts that have specific names. The art of trading is called okhukusiania while batter trade is called okhukulasania. These payments are in the form of animals, cereals, precious items and money. Some payments can only be understood if used with possessive marking prefix aka~, eya~, esia~ or echia~.
  1. Amaecho- payment given to a girl or parents of a girl before marriage to strengthen friendship.
  2. Amakata- payment made to elders who take part to listen to a case during a sitting. Also, modernly used to refer for sitting allowances during meetings.
  3. Asoya- any form of bribe; payment for corruption deal. 
  4. Ebianwa- periodic remitance.
  5. Ebiechoecho- extra privilage payments called marupurupu in Kiswahili.
  6. Ebimanuswa- presents given during a visit to a visitor for having helped the host orhas as an appreciation for the visit.
  7. Ebinywa- presents leaders that is in form of cereals
  8. Ebiseke- advance payment to motivate a worker.
  9. Ebiteberesio- any presents similar to amaecho but given as part of the dowry or dowry promises. They can be pieces of clothing such as echabe.
  10. Echia-emoni- payment one receives as appreciation for picking somebody's lost item after taking it back to him.
  11. Echia-esabo- payment made for religious purposes during religious or ancestral cultural prayers. At times it was an animal that was slaughtered. The ewuivalent of sadaka.
  12. Echia-esambo- payment made to a person as presents during ceremonial celebration.
  13. Echia-esianyi- present given to a virgin lady in a traditional marriage before she accepted to enter the house.
  14. Echia-esibeko- payment made in addition to a fine due to delayed payment
  15. Echia-esiruukhi- payment givengiven as a fine to unacceptable conjugal relations.
  16. Echia-olubere- payment that is part of dowry given as compensation for making the ladie's breast to droop by suckling ones child.
  17. Echia-olukumba- payment made to a circimcisor.
  18. Echia-olume- payment deposit made for medicine.
  19. Echia-olumwo- payment made to one playing a big role in cultural shaving.
  20. Echia-oluwubi- payment given to great grandfather before they could accept to see and hold a young great-grandchild calle esisoni.
  21. Eya-omuomolo- payment given to the birth attendance.
  22. Eya-efumo-  The payment given to the parents of the girl if the girl died while delivering. It was usually a cattle.
  23. Ekhwe- payment given to parents of a girl after marriage.
  24. Ekhoni- paument of cattle made to your sister's child during circumcision ceremony.
  25. Ekokhe- payment given to the in-laws after one has officially inherited their daughter upon death of husband.
  26. Embanjwa- arrears.
  27. Embusi ya olusala- a payment made to the uncles of a boy who was given a live animal for ekhoni during circumcision.
  28. Embusi ya omwiikho- a goat that the clan to the wife gives to the aunt of the husband incase she beats her husband. An aunt was usually the last woman to beat a man with a cooking stick just before circumcision.
  29. Embusi ya senge- a goat the firms part if dowry which is given to the aunt as payment for having helped to advise one's wife on issues of chastity.
  30. Embusu- amount loaned out such that the person who borrowed will return the same amount or its equivalent after some time. The action of this borrowing is called okhusunga.
  31. Emusu- what is given out as appreciation to a person for having taken care of your animals at his home.
  32. Enganga- money that comes as profit.
  33. Engokho ya emikoye- a paymeny, usually of chicken, given to people who have brought dowry in order for them to return the ropes used to the owner of the dowry.
  34. Enyongesa- bonus pay. At start of meat selling usomg kuroonya call, the then butcher could add a small piece of meat to those who brought barter items. Since this happened on Satrurdays, Saturday became known as Munyongesa.
  35. Esichuundo- ones income or revenue.
  36. Esiwaabo- payment made by a person who unknowingly tried to seduce, but never reached a point of coitus with, his relative who has cursing powers over him such as maternal aunt. It was usually a chicken.
  37. Esiwololo- part of the dowry that is paid back after termination of a marriage.

  39. Esikamo- payment made by uncles to their sister's child.
  40. Esisumo- beggars' alms.
  41. E-súlu- loss.
  42. Eposo- salary or pay given after work for the work done for some days.
  43. Esia-olukendo- fare or payment given for accepting to be send suc as those who went to pay dowry.
  44. Esitoyiriso- payment to cross a river via a boat or rope bridge called omufunje.
  45. Esiimbi- payment for a bet
  46. Esiemiko- first payment made to cool down the tempers of parents upon marying their daughter.
  47. Etolondo- bung; the money or payment that you give to someone secretly in order to make them do something illegal. 
  48. Omufuwo- payment made to musician to sing in your fevour or continue singing. Also to a candidate who has managed a hard task such as what is given after curcumcision. Also, the offering of food, objects or the lives of animals or humans to a higher purpose, in particular divine beings, as an act of propitiation or worship
  49. Omukabo- a gift given albeit expected by the recepient as part of the culture. 
  50. Omukhiino- well wishers' donation to one who has nothing. Common during havesting of white ants.
  51. Omulalo- payment given to one after looking after animals for some time.
  52. Omuyoolo- payment for legal damages.
  53. Ekobi- debt.
  54. Oluchuumbi- payment made to a blacksmith in exchange of metalic item such as jingles, steal rings (esitiri) etc
  55. Olubaka- payment made to age-set members after circumcising one's son.
  56. Olubasi- mortgage or pay for conditional fee agreement.
  57. Olulingo- payment for consulting a witchdoctor 
  58. Olusambo- a token of appreciation for any good work done by a person.
  59. Olusiingo- bond.
  60. Olumuso- payment made to a person for taking care of your animals in his home.
  61. Omubanjio- a fractionof money that remains after paying part of the debt.
  62. Omukabo- inheritance wealth or shares.
  63. Omukulukho- payment made to grave diggers. 
  64. Omukulasianio- batter trade quantinties; barter. 
  65. Omukusianio- cash given when buying an item.
  66. Omupeyo- auction sale.
  67. Omusisi- payment made as a fine for breaking rules at beer drinking place.
  68. Omusololo- shares.
  69. Omwandu- investment returns
  70. Omwoulo- this is the payment given by the in-laws in appreciation to one for having paid dowry well and taken care of  their kin in marriage life.
  71. Owuchosi- tax
  72. Owukhonyi- grant or donation help 
  73. Owukhala- the extra that you are paid on top as part of compensation.
  74. Owukusi- selling price payment for an item.
  75. Owukusiliru- extreme high selling price inclusive of taxes or commission for the middleman.

ABANYALA BA KAKAMEGA: Abanyala Music, Dances and Clothing

Abanyala ba Kakamega have songs and dances during most of their cultural activities. The singing and dancing comprise of key elements: the dancing arena (omuse), authentic songs melodies ( emienya ), the singers ( ab'embi ), the authentic dance styles ( oukhino ), the authentic costumes and decor ( emiefwalo ) and authentic instrumentation ( amakhana ). ABANYALA BA KAKAMEGA: The Clan of Abasonge.

Abasonge is one of the clans among the Abanyala ba Kakameka. This Abasonge clan of the Abanyala is one among the six Abasonge sub-clans found among six sub-tribes of Western Kenya. It is with a lot of curiosity to note that Basonge or Abasonge or Abasonje in Kenya do share a name with the Basonge (originally Songye) in Zaire. However, they may be a different people or same people who separated centuries ago. 1. The six family groups of Abasonge.
