ABANYALA BA KAKAMEGA: Words to Express Politeness in Olunyala (K).

Abanyala ba kakamega  speak with a lot of etiquette in their verbal interactions. The main way being addition of the ~kho Politeness Marker Suffix (PMS ) on verbs.  The following are the main ways used to signal politeness. Ab'oluyali-  used as word of respect when addressing honourable person(s). Abakeni ab'oluyali , milembe. Omukeni ow'oluyali Yosefu Wawire, mulembe. Abanyala ba Kakamega: Language- How to greet in Olunyala (K).

By Balovera Edwin Ongacho Abanyala ba Kakamega have greetings that are done both nonverbally and/or verbally as dictated by the Abanyala  cultural norms. Cultural aspects guiding greetings. Abanyala accepted two types on nonverbal communication to be used together with verbal greetings: handshake and waving. The following are observed as greeting norms: Failure to air out greetings was considered a sign of indiscipline among children. Among the elderly it announced lack of peace. When the person being greeted was near, then the greeting had to be accampanied, if culturally allowed, by a handshake. There were different types of handshake intensities basing on the level of relations. The following people were never greeted by handshake due to various reasons: A son-in-law never did a handshake with the mother-in-law and aunt-in-laws. Olunyala (K) is one of the more than 17 dialects of Luyia Language spoken in Western Kenya , East Africa . (Angogo 1980, Guthrie, 1976: Osogo, 1966). The purpose of this project article was to document the Indigenous names of herptile, ebikhuraanda ,  in Olunyala (K). 1. Abstract. Scientific taxonomy, as the only way of communicating about wildlife, might have minimal utility to wildlife conservation stakeholders who have limited understanding of scientific names. Names in Indigenous language can improve species-specific communication with stakeholders who are not experts due to their familiarity. Indigenous names for wildlife in Olunyala (K) are, however, not specific to all scientifically described species and are rarely documented for wider use.
